Clementi, Singapore : ウィキペディア英語版 | Clementi, Singapore
Clementi (officially referred to as Clementi New Town, by the Housing and Development Board 〔(HDB Database by Teoalida )〕) is an urban planning area and residential district located in the Western region of Singapore. The district borders Bukit Batok to the north, Bukit Timah to the north-east, Queenstown to the east and Jurong East to the west. ==Etymology==
'Clementi' derived its name from 'Clementi Road', the main traffic route that still runs into the district to this day. It was once known as 'Reformatory Road' until 1947, when the Singapore Rural Board discussed renaming the road. Their original intention was to name it after Sir Hugh Clifford, but eventually the board decided to give this honour to the late Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, who was the first British High Commissioner in the Straits Settlements.〔(Singapore Infopedia | Clementi New Town )〕 The governor was an accomplished Chinese scholar. Among his achievements during his stint in office were laws brought into force to control secret societies in Singapore. Having been a popular governor, the Chinese community petitioned for his continuation in the post when he left Singapore in 1893.
